Animal Husbandry

Based on requests from several of our clients, Osorno has formulated products for animal husbandry applications. Osorno serves clients with their poultry, hog, cattle, and aquaculture operations.

Foot Rot Prevention

Foot (or hoof) rot, or infectious pododermatitis, is an infection commonly found in sheep, goats, and cattle. As the name suggests, it rots away the foot of the animal, specifically the area between the two toes.  Foot rot is extremely painful and contagious, which if untreated can infect an entire herd.  It can be treated by eliminating the species of anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen) with a series of medications.

A good way to prevent foot rot is though regular footbathing. Typically, the bath contains copper sulfate (“bluestone”). Osorno’s hoof rot prevention solution is an advanced formulation that uses CuproCitrol™ and zinc formiate, both of which increase the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of the product. Zinc also helps maintain the skin and hooves of cattle. Cattle deficient in zinc will become infected more easily than cattle with adequate zinc in their bodies.

Unlike common powdery products, Osorno’s foot rot prevention is pre-dissolved for ease of handling, and is sold in 20 litre pails.

Recommended dosage: The content of one pail is to be diluted with water to 100 litres foot-bath liquid.

 VacciTect™

VacciTect™ is an enhanced anti-oxidant which eliminates disinfectants in water (chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide). This avoids interference between the water disinfectant and medications, vaccines, or vitamins injected into the drinking water line. Osorno’s VacciTect™ is a solution that temporarily destroys the disinfectant, and is safe for use with animals.

Osorno sells VacciTect™ in 1 litre bottles.

Recommended dosage: 100 – 200 ml of VacciTect™ per 1 m3 of water, or 440 – 880 ml of VacciTect™ per 1,000 imperial gallons of water.

Hydrogen Peroxide & Peracetic Acid

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and peracetic acid are the disinfectants of choice in hatcheries for egg shell washing. Both oxidize the organic layer on the surface of egg shells destroying bacteria and fungus spores.

Recommended dosage for 12% H2O2 solution: 0.5% concentration (40 – 45 ml per 1 litre of water).

This product has also been successfully used in aquacultural operations to reduce mortality of trout fingerlings.

Hydrogen peroxide (12%) is sold in 4 litre bottles and 20 litre delcans. Peracetic acid is sold in 4 litre bottles. They should be stored in a cool, dark place to maintain their efficacy.

Usage information is provided with the product, and is dependant on the application.

Chlorine Dioxide

Chlorine dioxide is an effective water disinfectant with high persistence and disinfection power. Osorno can advise clients on whether a chlorine dioxide generator or the use of PowerOxide™ is the more economical solution for their particular situation.

Gaseous chlorine dioxide is a powerful disinfectant for use in hatcheries prior to incubating a new charge of eggs.

Preparation as Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide: A small portion of PowerOxide™ (4 litre) can be prepared and left open inside the hatchery for 1 day. For better transfer of chlorine dioxide gas, bubble air through the solution.

Chlorine dioxide solution can also be used as a powerful surface disinfectant.

Preparation as Surface Disinfectant:  Dilute 10 ml of concentrated PowerOxide™ solution in 1 litre of water.

DisOx™

DisOx™ is a powerful multi-purpose disinfectant with a wide spectrum of activity against viruses, fungi and bacteria.  It is effective for use in hatcheries and barns for superior pathogen control.

DisOx™ is sold in 1 kg jars and 20 kg pails.
